Rejoice Always! Pray Constantly! 1 Thessalonians 5:16-17 |
|
Prayer ought to be short and pure,
unless it be prolonged by the inspiration of Divine grace. ~ St. Benedict When we pray, the voice of the heart must be heard more than that
proceeding from the mouth. Let us help
commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice,
why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some
consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer
our prayers for them. Of all divine things,
the most godlike is to co-operate with God in the conversion of sinners.
My little children, your hearts are small, but prayer
stretches them and makes them capable of loving God. Through prayer we
receive a foretaste of Heaven and something of paradise comes down upon us.
Prayer never leaves us without sweetness. It is honey God would not urge us to ask, unless He were willing to give.
If we
try to escape sadness by seeking our consolation in sleep, we will fail to
find what we are seeking, for we will lose in sleep the consolation we might
have received from God if we had stayed awake and prayed. Remember that Jesus Christ, referring to the humility of the publican, said that his prayer was heard. If this was said of a man whose life was evil, what may we not hope for if we are really humble? ~ St. Vincent de Paul |
He who
labors as he prays lifts his heart to God with his hands. Pray with great confidence, with confidence based upon
the goodness and infinite generosity of God and upon the promises of Jesus
Christ. God is a spring of living water which flows unceasingly into the
hearts of those who pray. ~ St. Louis de Montfort If we should be
saved and become saints, we ought always to stand at the gates of the Divine
mercy to beg and pray for, as an alms, all that we need. ~ St. Alphonsus Liguori If God seems slow in responding, it is because He is
preparing a better gift. He will not deny us. God witholds what you are not
yet ready for. He wants you to have a lively desire for His greatest gifts.
All of which is to say, pray always and do not lose heart. Do you desire security? Here you have it. The Lord
says to you, "I will never abandon you, I will always be with you" If a good
man made you such a promise, you would trust him. God makes it, and do you
doubt? Do you seek a support more sure than the word ~ St.
Augustine God told me, "God replied to me," they assert--- and yet most of
the time they are talking to themselves. He
who does not give up prayer cannot possibly continue to offend God
Habitually. Either he will give up prayer, or he will stop sinning.
For prayer to be effective, our petitions should be for benefits worthily
to be expected from God. |
