St Matthew the Apostle

Feast Day - September 21

Who was Saint Matthew the Apostle?

Matthew was one of the twelve apostles whose  firsthand experience and witness told the world of the Word made Flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. Matthew was a Jew who worked for the occupying Roman forces, collecting taxes from other Jews. Tax collectors were hated as traitors by their own people.  It was shocking to the people to have Jesus call someone like Matthew to be a close friend and follower.  Matthew preached among the Jews for 15 years. Our faith rests upon his witness and that of his fellow apostles.

Prayer to St Matthew

O Glorious St. Matthew, in your Gospel you portray Jesus as the longed-for Messiah who fulfilled the Prophets of the Old Covenant and as the new Lawgiver who founded a Church of the New Covenant. Obtain for us the grace to see Jesus living in his Church and to follow his teachings in our lives on earth so that we may live forever with him in heaven.
