Mary, Mother of God

Feast Day January 1

In the MMG we recognize that our prodigal loved ones are also Mary's children.  She knows the pain of feeling helpless as a grown child walks into trouble in the world.  We trust that because she loves our prodigals with a mother's love, she will watch over them if we ask. In intercession for them, she will carry our prayers to the throne of her Son, Jesus.

"Mary, Mother of God"

One of the earliest titles given by Christians to the Blessed Virgin was Theotokos (God-bearer). It became the touchstone of the Church’s teaching about the Incarnation.

Other themes come together at today’s celebration. It is the Octave of Christmas: Our remembrance of Mary’s divine motherhood injects a further note of Christmas joy. It is a day of prayer for world peace: Mary is the mother of the Prince of Peace. It is the first day of a new year: Mary continues to bring new life to her children—who are also God’s children.

Prayer to the Mother of God
The Memorare

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
